Default Had a real scare this afternoon...

Riding through Hook, a kid started riding out on his bicycle as I was riding through a green light on a crossing- had no time to brake/avoid as I was almost on top of him when it happened and caught his front wheel with the side of the bike.

Fortunately, he escaped with a couple of cuts on his legs- not wearing any shoes and shorts on- it could have been much worse. No damage to his bike but a scraped pedal.

A man stopped and checked him out- saw it all happen and the kid (who was shaken up- much like me) went on his way. The man offered his details, but at the time I refused- no real damage done and no one took any numbers. I have left a phone number, as his son (who was there) works in the Tesco- so I guess retrospectively I can get witness details just in case. Another passer by reckoned I should inform the police anyway, as the parents of the child might and therefore look into the CCTV cameras (couldn't see any, but I'd be surprised, in that area, if there were none).

Any suggestions from experience? And if I report to the police, should I tell the insurance too? I'm reasonably sure nothing will come of it, but you never know. I'm mainly shaken up- it's not a nice thing to happen...

Report it straight away! I had a similar incident but in a car several years ago and have only just got rid of the points I got after the cyclist, who wasn't injured but damaged my car, reported it.

Thought about that- but the kid was on his own (only 7/8ish) and no one took any details- not my license plate or anything. I've left contact details so the witness can get back to me, but beyond that, the lad just rode off on his way with no fuss. Unless there's CCTV or someone else took my license plate details, there wasn't much to tell.

You are required by law to report any accident where someone is injured "as soon as possible and in any case within 24 hours"
You are already risking prosecution for failing to do so as soon as possible so I would get on with it.Probably nothing will come of it but try this scenario----Kid goes home and mum asks how he cut his leg.Kid tells mum who promplt marches him down to the police station and demands answers.Suddenly you are looking very guilty irrespective of what really happened.

Report it with in 24 hours. All injury accidents how ever minor require a Police presence. You should not leave a scene unless it is too dangerous to stay eg your about to get a shoeing or get run over by a truck etc

Been and got the form- stamped with today's date to show I turned up within 24 hours. Just waiting for witness details and will drop in tomorrow...

Cheers for the advice guys- I think I would have anyway, otherwise I'd have not slept.

It's nice to know we're a reasonably responsible lot round here...!
