I was in a bike shop t'other day and thought I'd ask how long I should keep my lid for. They said that even though I don't do a lot of miles and the lid isn't exposed to sunshine a lot I should change it after 3 or 4 years. They also said that some makes will be good for longer like arai?
Can anyone explain this to me a bit better and also how long do you keep your lid for? ![]() |

Think it depends on loads of variables. None that cane be visibly seen. Like I was always told dont stick your gloves in your lid as it can damage the inners. If you do that I suppose it will shorten the life.... but how do you know. The longest Ive had a lid is 5 years but I still use it for mini motoing. Bit of a mystery to me too.

I put my gloves in my lid, can't see how it will damage it. I think a year for every hundred quid is probably right!

Being a cynical sort I reckon this is more to do with selling new lids to bikers who are always a finite market.I replace my lid when it gets damaged,or when I just know it has spent a very long time exposed to UV light and or chemicals.Could be totally wrong, but common sense prevails for me.I do use an expensive top of range Shoei though.

Gloves in lid damage it by the velcro pulling at the lining and making it go all fluffy, arai will only replace the strap on their helmets ONCE foc under warranty for this reason, weve known customers ahve helmets until the lining/padding is literally falling out!
Me, my lids due for change soon, had it nearly 5 years-shoei x-sprit, to be replaced by arai corsair |

I think the problem with putting your gloves inside your lid, apart from pulling the liner of the helmet is something to do with what is on your gloves. They are always exposed to the elements so are covered in all the petrol fumes, petrol splash from when you fill up etc and it can damage the poly inside. As I say I'm sont sure how true it all is but it is one of those things that has stuck with me and I've just never done it.

Had the Shoei for 2 years and thinking about changing the cheek pads...should go for another 2 without problem. Think i'll buy an Arai next as I seem to have the correctly shaped head for one
