Default Pay to park in London?

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standa...ark/article.do

I love the comment "Paul" has left at the bottom of that article.... he's just so right!!!

So what does everyone think about this?
Personaly i cant se how we are going to be able to pay for the space if they are trying to get rid of the traditional meters.

Pay & display obviously wont work and this nonsense assumption that everyone carries a mobile phone so they can pay for their parking by phone is limiting too.

Personaly i'd rather have to pay to park than pay a the con that is "congestion charging". Dont see how 4 bikes taking up the same space as 1 car can be contributing to congestion.

Discuss.

You say 4 bike take up one car space.
Well the pricing at 1.50 a day (£6 compared with one car 9 hrs = £36) it really is quite nominal at the mo.
Would obviously prefer to be free but it would probably lead to it being a lot easier to find a space as they could get rid of all the abandoned bikes.
Yup I imagine text will be the way to pay (plus internet for term parking) I would have thought bikers would be happy with that method rather than pay & display & be at risk of having their ticket stolen.

Surely not nonsense?

that makes sense stu, but as you say how log would it be before we'd be paying £5 a day?!

Makes me glad I've got an underground carpark at work as I think I'd be a tad peeved if I had to pay to park ontop of everything else every day. True, it's only £1.50/day but it all adds up, and as has been said how long before it goes up?

Anyone remember that bendy bus experiment?

Erm, i actulay meant that 4 bikes take up the same space on a road as an "average" car does so we should not be threatened with congestion charging as 4 vs 1 is, if my brain serves me right, 4 times less congestion.

Most European countries allow motorbikes to park on pavements if they are parked in a "sensible manner". However if you park it on a narrow pavment with a red hot exhaust next to the legs of passing pedestrians then it gets towed away.
But its not likely that London will follow suit as the pavements here all mainly too narrow and London isnt exactly known for a sensible policy towards parking is it
