Unless the entire world (and I am mainly looking at China) cleans up then nothing we do in this country can make a difference.

And from an Ethical viewpoint, we cannot with any consience hassle the countries playing catch-up the the UK/US into NOT going through the "dirty" stage that we went through a number of years ago.

* Ok, so maybe calling for the deletion of the thread is a bit much, but look at how our Carbon Footprints are used to screw us more and more.

The Congestion charge was introduced to help traffic in London flow - now its an environmental tax.

That is just one example.

I know where I would like to leave MY carbon footprint.........

When the government want you to throw away a 5 year old vehicle so you can replace it with a new one that produces 0.01% less CO2 so they can hit some ****ing target to avoid an EU fine that THEY signed us up to in the first place, I have no faith in anything we're told.

It doesn't matter how much we cut down. Cutting vehicle emmissions by 5% is meaningless if 20% more cars get on the road. Ultimately, if humans really are having an effect on climate, it's because there are too many of us.

Collectively, it always matters. It reminds me of the story about the sea turtles. Long story short, thousands of turtles washed up on a beach. A lone old man goes out and starts throwing them back into the sea. Another man sees this and tells the old man to stop wasting his time as it won't make a difference. But the old man wisely retorts, "To those few it makes the world of difference". The government are partly to blame for some attitudes towards being enviromentally freindly. They use it to extort money from us so we then just see anything related to the environment as a way to gain more money from us. Until this changes most people will be reluctant to start caring. Now, I need to hug some trees.

I posted 'do you really care' because I really don't. I'm so bored with it all - for all the reasons above. Selfish? no, just fed up with being lectured and lied to.

These are the ones who say they have planted a tree to offset their carbon footprint!

I agree, the government have a lot to answer for. But in essence it's so simple. More humans creating carbon = bad for the planet. To think anything else is just plain ignorance. Oh shoot, I sound like a hippy now!

I dont understand it. I dont want to understand it.
If we are producing too much CO2, then my simple answer would be stop building more houses & factories throughout the world & plant more trees & plants, thus reducing CO2 & increasing O2, photosynthesis is what it's called (I think )

Government at the moment seems to reckon that the general public is there to serve them, rather than vice versa. Profiteering tossers.

The one that made me laugh/cringe is some bunch of idiots around uni wanting to cut funding to engineering on the basis that accepting funding from military industries is "unethical" and "we're a bunch of petrolheads" Completely missing the point that things like the formula student racing is where a great deal of new research into making vehicles more environmentally friendly goes on. F1 and KERS is another technology which will eventually make its way down to normal cars, but the loonies want to ban as the noise scares their gange plants or some other such crap.

How is it bad for the planet?

Planet heats up, Ice cpas melt, humans die off, possibly talking all other life, planet waits another couple of billion years, life re-appears.

I dont think even a few thousand degrees of the temperature rising would bother the planet.

Would lead to new oilfields tho :P

Okay so when I say the planet I mean the inhabitants of the planet. Not the rock itself, and in the way that because of our love of fossil fules and Co2 we make the planet uninhabitable and kill off most other carbon based life forms for a few million years. It's a little selfish. Besides, I recon Earth will be like Mars in a few billion years. And if you compare planets Earth sure as hell looks a lot healthier! Maybe it's all pointless anyway. What with the Sun getting bigger. It will eventually exhaust it's fuel and go supernova but not before it swallows the Earth anyway. Feck it, let's all buy RV's and live near swamps.
