The GS, in all sizes, has always been a great bike, it has rather suffered from the 'Ewan 'n Charlie effect' though.
Buy a plain Jane R1200 instead, the same mechanicals where it matters and a big chunk cheaper, or an R1100S/1200S, fantastic motorbike. Despite what people might think it's quicker than you are*. PS. Anyone that thinks they're old man's bikes clearly ain't ridden a recent one. *Like just about every modern bike.

I got overtaken going up Hartside by a bloke on a GS who pretty much had the panniers scraping on the floor!

Cooey!!!!! I can still get internet access in Europe you know!!! You cheeky beggars! Go back to your sore backs from hugging your petrol tanks on a motorway. You're only jealous that top-boxes make the sv look ghey! Whilst a GS can pull it off nicely. Dirk BMW GS 650 Dakar owner & proud.....currently plotting my route out of Europe. Rode an F650CS for my DAS- very cosy, but not the most exciting bike in the world. My mate had the F650CS before he got the Ninja and decided he wasn't able to control the throttle well enough to keep his licence long term Like the KTM's though, I find the styling a little too linear. |

I ride a 1200 GS (as well as a naked SV Thou)
(1) I DON'T wear BMW gear - I looked at it, it's good kit but I got a sweet deal on some Rukka gear instead. (2) I DON'T filter at 3 mph - in many ways it's a better bike for filtering than the SV because it has a far tighter turning circle that allows me to change lanes between vehicles if the gap 'closes'. (3) Why would I want to buy an SV 650 instead of a 1200 GS - just to save some money - totally different bikes ??? (4) There ARE many faster bikes (and riders) on the road - the GS isn't designed for 'balls out' riding - just for quick, comfortable mile munching - although, if the 'red mist' descends . . . . . . well, you might like to ask some of the org-ans who attended last years Org Goes To France day what the result can be !! ![]()

I was in Alaska for 2 months last summer and I got a loan of an 1100GS for a week - rode it from fairbanks (in the middle) to deadhorse (right up north) about 300 miles inside the arctic circle - pretty much as far as you can go by road there.
What alaskans call roads are frankly laughable by our standards - even ther good ones - due to yearly permafrost damage and the fact they hate paying tax. The last 200 miles or so were pretty much dirt track. Didn't get so much as a sore bum on the GS -awesome bike when its in its element. Did I mention they make great beer out there too? got about half a million pics of the trip if anyone's interested |

I think the GS looks ok but its not my cuppa tea. Dont see that many about in Yorkshire countryside. Which is odd, maybe its like a 4x4 people get the for City riding heh
