Road Tax - Quick Question

Got my new bike Weds and the insurance docs through today, now the question is:

I want to tax it but is there a way of taxing it without losing almost a full months tax by buying it today?

Any ideas?

If you want to be on the road you technically need to pay from last month. That said I'm pretty sure you have 14 days grace period to tax a vehicle. To cover the possibility it's being done by post etc. Whether that means you can pay from the start of next month, or you have 14 days to get the back-tax sorted out I don't know.

Try getting a tax disc online here and see when the tax comes in and until when it is valid? You can abandon the attempt if you will end up paying for this month.

Can't get the disc online until you have the V5 in your grubby mitts, otherwise it get's posted to the previous owner.

Ahh yes, I see the flaw in my little scheme then.

What about going to local post office? that would solve the posting to ex owner bit, not sure about the date thing though..

The only possible way is to not tax it until wed next month.

At £4 a month are you feeling the pinch?


yes I know it galls, but just think how the govt. can put that extra £4 to fixing pot holes

If the OP goes to a post office, the tax will start at the beginning of this month. For the £5 it costs, is it really worth the hassel of not bothering?

the 14 days grace was always a myth. They have just introduced a 5 day grace from the 1-5th of the month to wait for your disc to come in the post as long as the vehicle was taxed last month & you bought the new one online before the old one ran out.
