My local morrisons is fine with bikes, i turn up, i sit on the bike with my lid and gloves on and fill it up to the brim, i then either pay at the pump or walk into the shop with my black visor on and they take my money and i leave with my fuel

simple, as it should be...

YC's just said about metal tending to spark on contact with the ground and petrol catching fire really easily; he wouldn't want to be the one nearby with fuel all over his...well you get the gist Not a risk you'd want to take though if anything did go wrong but then if you're used to the weight of the bike with a full tank then can't be much else to worry about.

It would have to be very windy to knock me off my bike when I'm at a standstill with my feet on the ground

Freak weather conditions and all that . But then your bike would probably end up horizontal anyway...

I actually had my VFR fall on me putting the stand down though at a petrol station - that was the first time I had ever fallen too and I was trapped inbetween the pump and the bike In my defence though I think the stands on VFR's are quite temperamental ...........

i got told to remove my lid before the attendant could switched the pump on at a shell. okay, i thought.
went in to pay and the muslim attendant had a couple of his relations with him behind the counter. both of whom were wearing veils.
never set foot in there again.

Yup, with a little shuffle can get bit more in. Not much, but every little helps with a bike.
