Default A few questions about my little baby

Hey folks, i am so glad i ahve found a dedicated website to the wonderful sv.
Now to my questions, i have a rather beautiful 2003 sv650s in the suzuki blue, my questions are as follows:

1. I have got lower fairings on my bike, and they have some small scratches on both sides, resulting in me wanting to touch up the fairings, does anyone know where i can get this paint or a match for it. i have looked everywhere but just cant seem to find anyone!

2. Again relating to the fairings, i would like to have some bobbins fitted but dont want to drill into the fairings, any ideas where i can get them from, i have looked even on ebay to no evail pls help.

3. I am also looking for a good quality seat cowl, are there any companies that anyone can recomend to use, i would prefer it to be a blue one, but if not will always spray it myslef.

4. And finally when in 1st and 2nd gear at very very slow travelling speed i seem to get a whining noise from my little beauty and have no idea what it could be, i thought that it may be the sprocket but as i am new to biking i am just guessing anyone have any ideas, how can you tell when it is time for a sprocket change?

I would much appreciate your help on these matters, thanks people!!

Welcome to the org mr/mrs bike lover.

1. If your new to biking I wouldnt go touchgin the paint work up just yet, you will at somepoint over the next few months drop/roll it into something. Making it look pretty now will just hurt more when this happens. My advice would be to hold back on the aesthetics for right now.

2. I think you can get some RG bobbins for the pointy, these just replace the main fairing bolt and bolt direct the to frame.

3. Just looked at seat cowels myself on Ebay many many many blue ones on there, nearly all look the same so - go nuts.

4. At slow speeds I get an odd noise, took me ages to figure it out (well yorkie chirs found it really) but it was simple a gentle rattle from the pillion foot rest. If its something which isnt effecting the ride then I'd not worry too much wait until a SV meet and get someone to take a look for you. If it bugs the hell out of you then simply dont go slow

1. Dump cheap and nasty fairing

2. Dump cheap and nasty fairing

3. Suzuki one and you get all the bits. Mine was £35 new.

4. Check your chain tension, a too tight chain can cause extra noise. If the teeth on your sprockets are hooked and not of equal transition, they are fairly gubbed . Always buy a chain and sprocket set. Not one without the other. False economy etc. If all that is fine buy a loud exhaust!

Oh and congratulations on getting the best year SV.

Have you tried the Suzuki dealer? The paint code can be found under the rear seat IIRC

2. Again relating to the fairings, i would like to have some bobbins fitted but don't want to drill into the fairings, any ideas where i can get them from, i have looked even on ebay to no evail pls help.

Motosliders (the best IMHO) now do non-drill crash bungs. http://www.motosliders.com/MS-5.html You need to order from the US but that's no problem. Else you can get R&G bungs, they do a non-drill version to. Order from any R&G dealer or online.

3. I am also looking for a good quality seat cowl, are there any companies that anyone can recomend to use, i would prefer it to be a blue one, but if not will always spray it myslef.

The OEM Suzuki cowl looks best IMO. Available colour matched from the Suzuki dealer! Try looking in the for sale section on here, they often come up.

The whining is most likely just gear whine due to the large difference in cog sizes in 1st / 2nd. If it was chain / sprockets it would get louder as you speed up and be noticeable in 3rd and maybe 4th (until wind noise drowns it out.

To check your chain and sprockets for adjustment, place the bike on the stand then measure the amount of vertical movement on the bottom run of the chain. There should be 20-30 mm of movement. If there is less than this then the chain is too tight and could be causing the whine you mention. If it is more then 30mm you run the risk of the chain coming off. To adjust you need to slacken the rear axle bolt then use the adjuster bolts on the very rear of the swing arm to tighten / slacken. Do the axle bolt back up to the correct torque (100Nm). If you not happy doing this yourself, get a competent mechanic to show you how.

To check if the chain/sprockets need replacing, after you have adjusted your chain to correct tension, look at the sprocket teeth (especially the front sprocket), are they hooked on one side, so looking a bit like a shark's fin? This shows wear and it will need replaceing. Another check is if the chain is correctly adjusted but you can still lift the chain away from the rear sprocket on the rear edge then again most likely needs replacing. Again if you not happy doing this check, get a competent mechanic to show you how.

I would much appreciate your help on these matters, thanks people!!

Your paint code is YC2 Grand Candy Blue.
www.paints4u.com sell rattle cans for £10.99 - perfect match. I'm spraying a belly pan over the weekend. Candy is very difficult to spray, as it's a tri-coat process, there's a silver base/ground coat, then the blue, what is tranparent, is lightly applied to show the base coat (that's the glitterness), then lacquer.

HTH

Where are you based?

I also have that same colour with the same scratches on the side of the fairings. You can try to touch up the scratches yourself but IVe been advised by 3 different paintshops that the recommended process for this colour is a full respray. Its almost impossible to colour match. My friend is a sprayer and he though this a bit weird but tried it on the little black diamond shped pieces under the seat that cover the seat bolts. He couldnt get the colour to match either and hes won awards for his work!

I've never won an award yet, but I can get it colour-matched! I sprayed the belly pan and undertray on my, now written off K3.

As this is a tri-coat paint process, no form of touch up paint will do the job - based on this. The blue is transparent, so that the silver basecoat can shine through.

That's because Suzuki did not have the colour scheme Grand Napoleon Blue in thier 2003 range!
