cheers for the reply people,
so not being able to spend a few grand at the moment on a fast fixed tele lens i think the vr will definately be the option for me then
Just need a good fast lens then.
Prob the 50mm 1.4.

How fast and how long do you want? God, this didn't sound good...
Just asking because there's another gem in Nikon's catalog that you might have not heard of before: 85mm f/1.8D. Roughly in the same price range as the 50mm f/1.4, but a lot better for portrait work. Doesn't have built-in motor, but that's not a problem for the D90 as it has a screw-drive.

Or if you'd like to go Macro but keep the portrait option open, Tamron 90mm f/2.8. You lose roughly 2 stops of aperture, but f/2.8 is still very respectable for a portrait lens, and again, same price range.

Mmmmm, the Tamron 90mm would be tempting. When I used to shoot film the Tamron 90mm was my favourite lens. Great optical quality close up and nice for portraits.

With the 1.5x multiplication on digital cameras the Nikon 60mm macro gives me much the same field of view, which is probably why I use it a lot.

Ta,
the tamron sounds like quite a good idea.
i may have to get that and the 70-300vr and that should give me a good range to get my hand back in and see which i end up using the most.
that should give me an option for portrait/macro and also with the 300 a bit of local wildlife.
As you can tell i have been away for photography so long that i am having to learn all over again!

Depends on requirements. Portability or stability?

Or if you can't afford that, then these are supposed to be well worth the money:

They actually are, I've tried one before and they are really cool. Not exactly cheap, especially as you go up the range for heavier stuff models, but very cool indeed.
