It's called fair use
there are certain exceptions where copying is allowed eg public interest, fair dealing etc

Lets look at the Oxford Dictionary definition of the word Steal shall we?

So, to Steal something you have to take it without intent to return it? What have I physically taken, all I have done by copying a file is set a bunch of magnetic particles to have specific properties, that when read, are the same as the original file, however the original file is still in the possession of the owner.

Therefore nothing has been stolen.

So its not theft.

well done. i was using laymans terms so as not to be confusing. i am quite cabable of using the proper legal terminology but it would be pretty meaningless to most people reading it. the cdpa is not exactly a light right.

Mate, get yourself an i-trip off ebay. About a tenner, and then you can listen to all your tunes in the car!

On the subject of d'loading, how about this one. I have about 200 lp's up in the loft. Can I download them as mp3's legally? Have I bought my little slice to the rights when buying the original lp or not?
