I take the approach of not really giving a damn. I had a similar argument in the office yesterday, when I said I'd sponsor one of the guys £5 for the eating contest. I was told that I was being tight.

My response was "OK, I'm tight, my 3 kids are each giving £5 tomorrow, I'm sponsoring £5 now, I'll be paying £10 tomorrow as part of the 'fine setup'. All in, that makes £30 out of my pokcet, before we even start looking at the donations my partner will be making. Children in Need... my kids have needs too, and remind me, how much are you donating?"

The person accusing me of being tight went quiet, very quickly.

We got taxed about 20 times today by people doing unimaginitive sweets and cakes sales. I tell them to **** off til they come back with some gluten free cakes and sugar free sweets

My office did a pretty cool thing today though... They'd got together with the other big centres for our division of the bank, and put on a cycling challenge, got 4 good exercise bikes in, and arranged some decent prizes for a competition (£400 odds of mountain bike donated by halfords etc). How it worked was, you paid your £1 for ten minutes on the bike, and for every mile you did in the day you got a raffle ticket. clever! They raised an absolute packet... Things like this I like, a lot of effort and planning and imagination went into that. Though my measley 8 miles won me squat

Someone else was doing a scalextric championship, with a huuuuuuuge scalextric track- it helps that we have lots of geeks in our building, one entire team all went out and bought a scalextric set, then they combined them for an epic layout that filled half the department. The toys I wanted when I was a kid
