Have the Haynes manual, it is more a lack of confidence than "I won't even attempt this" kinda thing.

With someone who knows what they're doing watching over and/or helping me out at it'll be great, it's just the thought of oh crap, I'm doing it alone and I've screwed up or done something very daft which could have been avoided that worries me!

Mike has offered to help and Dave needs some similar bits doing so will take them up on their offer - cheers to others for the offers as well

Out of interest did you ask that guy for a quote? just wondering what he charges for the service.

Is this the first service Chris? just wondering if it`s worth considering having the service record stamped?

Yup, he quoted me £160 to start with, then after mentioning the forum and Mark (mototech) and you ("the girl who had the tyres" as he said) he knocked £20 off.

£140 seems a decent price, dealer's wanted £170 (Marriot's) and £200 (Bill Smith's). Another highly recommended private place (Motrac Racing) wanted £170.

Overall though I want to learn how to do basic things myself, so Mike's offer is the only reason I didn't go with any company. Especially as he can do the throttle body synchronisation as well as that was one thing I expected to need someone else to do for me.

Oh and the service book has 3 main dealer stamps in it, I'll sign this once myself with the mileage and document everything that's done at Mike's.

I was looking at bikes with servicing done at home by the owner, and wasn't put off by any of them (in most cases it gave a better impression as it showed they cared for the bike regularly rather than a once a year look over by a dealer...), so it hopefully won't affect selling it on.

p.s. why I write so much is beyond me!

My piece of advice is if you are going to attemp this yourself in the future after mike has showed you how to do it, is to buy a torque wrench, the main problem with people with no mechanical training is that they fail to tighten bolts correctly, i,e either overtighten (risk snapping/stripping threads) or dont tighten enough i,e risk bolt/nut falling out/off. Just my two pence worth..

+1, first thing I did when I decided to have a crack at DIY on the bike.

Lidl have them on offer again I think.

I would advise against Marriotts as I can almost guarantee you that they won't follow the list of stuff that needs doing, they'll simply do an oil and filter change, have a quick gander at the chain and brakes and that's about it.

Orrell Park motorcycles will spend a good few hours on the bike, checking everything as will Ormskirk Motorcycles. Appreciate they a bit further from you though.

If you're not bothered about stamps in the book, then learning yourself/from others is definitely the way to go in my opinion.

Another one for the list, I would highly recommend Hondatech in Wallasey. Its a mate of mine called Paul who used to work for Honda. Very thorough and friendly. You can reach him on 0151 637 2221.

Tell him Mike sent you and he'll charge a little more . He'll know me as Dave's lad, from the racing.

If you decide to use him give me a shout for a cuppa nearby.

I can vouch for Hondatech (although for legal reasons he cannot use that name any more). He did my 16K valve check service on the VFR (pricey at Honda dealer and too complex / needs special tool for DIY) and did a good job and is lovely bloke. He was quite happy for me to service myself and just take it to him for 16K valve checks.
