Simple tip is look for small, yet boring, cars - ones that probably have 5 doors, no fancy 'sporty' lettering after the Model name, and is fairly basic.
When I was looking around for my first car (albeit 8/9 years ago now) I ended up with a K-reg Vauxhall Astra, which ended up being cheaper on insurance than some of my mates smaller cars (Citroen AX / Peugeot 106) even though they were cheaper and a bit older. I can only assume it was due to the higher risk of those other cars that were seen as more popular by other teenagers for the price, had more accidents, and therefore were a bigger risk. |

Citroen C2. 1.4l.
You might be able to find one with that sort of budget, or if you can squeeze a little more towards it. We have the automatic which is hard to find, and if you do find one, they've already been sold. We bought a 2004 with 62,000 on it for £1700 a couple of weeks back, for PEg and his dodgy leg! Insurance group 3....which just reading back is gonna be too expensive ![]() About 70MPG(doesn't make a difference with diesel or petrol) we have the petrol Dunno about tax, as its got a full year. I hate small cars, but its like driving a rollerskate with a missile under its ar$e! It cost a fiver to fix the door handle, and 20 quid to fix the fan, parts are reallllllly cheap! As for driving long distance, the wheel didn't fall off going to Essex and back over the weekend!

My suggestion would be for him to buy something below his budget, get a bit of experience and pay for some of the insurance with the money he saves on the purchase price--------e.g older Fiesta or Polo, plenty about for £5-800 and good cars.
He is not going to get cheap insurance on anything so something that he can have a bump or scratch in without careing to much might be a better proposition.Although he has passed his test he is still learning and if he has a little bump where it is only him involved he will not be a big loser. Probably not what you want to hear but sound advice |

I passed my car test a couple of Winters back . I bought a Honda HR-V as it fit the bill and wasn`t any more expensive to insure than a VW Lupo or some other POS teeny tiny testacle on wheels . When you pay monthly they put you on a credit agreement and load it up by another £250 due to that fact . So you gotta be ready for that with the monthly . The car has been brilliant , not the best on Petrol , I flatten the seat and load guitar amps in there , throw the MTB on the rack on the towbar , fling shopping in there and generally tool around in it . It has quite a good VTEC engine in it , cruises happily at 80 on the motorway .... stick yer foot down and it takes off like a scalded Kitten .... has cost me nothing on the last 2 MOT`s . And here is my gripe . It`s a Y reg . Just before the new Tax thingy came out and it is costing me £148 for 6 months . The same model a year later is way less .
The pros and cons are all over the place . The plucky Honda has had more pros , but , as anyone on facebook who knows me .... the Tax situation really grinds my nuts as it is always due on January the 1st , I cannot afford to Tax for a whole year and right after Christmas is a killer , then my Insurance wades in on the 21st of January .... followed by MOT in March ..... get to July and it`s another 6 months Tax . Screw it .... tell him to get an SV |

Nothing French or italian as he wont be able to afford the repair bills.Id suggest looking at a Nissan Micra from about 1995 to 99 for about £700.

Anyway, the advice is to buy some old piece of crap. Our first car back in 2003 was a 1989 Nissan Micra 1.0 POS. I traded up to a Volvo 440, smashed it up, bought another, kept it for a few more years. If you're a new driver you want something that's small, undesirable and easily fixed that you won't cry if you crash. A guy in work is about 23 but he bought a brand new Citroen C4 after having a crappy 106 for a few months as his first ever car. To my amazement he hasn't driven it into anything yet. |
