Jeez, its getting ridiculous. Going out on a Friday night in the 70's guaranteed at least you'd be groped. Crossing the production floor at work you'd be (un)lucky if you weren't groped.

I used to take it as a compliment.

Needless to say I never groped anyone.

As a 17 year old apprentice electrician working in a busy teaching hospital I used to take a lot of stick from older women members of staff, mainly staff nurses on all the wards.

In my first year hardly a day went by when one of them didn't stick a hand down my trousers and attempt to embarrass me in front of the other women, or grab my backside. There were frequently times when I'd have my head thrust into a heaving bosom and told "I'd teach you all I know" and similar, but I simply laughed, shrugged it off and thought it was just normal life at work.

If, by any freak chance, I'd end up in A+E, the first thing I'd be told to do is strip completely. From then on all female members of the staff would be in and out of the room for a gander. I got used to it and after a couple of times (I did crash bikes quite often back then) it didn't seem awkward. It probably did me a lot of good because it made me toughen up and able to respond to things easier. As a result I felt confident enough to date a few student nurses who were older than me while I worked there.

At no point did I feel it was sexual harassment or anything like it, as far as I was concerned the women were just brightening up an otherwise dull day and having a laugh. In the end I was giving back as good as I got and they responded well to it. I wasn't reported or admonished for my behaviour and neither were they.

I'd like to complain I never got harassed enough!

In the paper DLT said one event goes back to 1967?

I'm a crap electrician and decided I didn't want to be involved with electricity again, nothing more complex than that.

Besides, the lure of HM Forces was strong.
