Re: Repairing lime plaster...anyone in the know?
This may not be relevant for you, but one of my friends has a Victorian house where I helped to install some cabling. His walls are covered with about 1/2" of rather soft gypsum plaster. Nothing like the rock hard plasters in modern houses, but clearly gypsum rather than slaked lime.
It certainly seemed fairly porous, so it might be a solution for your walls. Just a thought, Keith. |

Re: Repairing lime plaster...anyone in the know?
The reason it was soft is because it was probably on a damp wall. This causes the plaster to blow. Either that or it never fully dried due to the moisture in the wall. Gypsum based plasters are not breathable and not suitable for lime walls. Though many builders still insist on using inappropriate materials either through laziness, cost/time savings or because they know no better. I think my house has been bodged for reason number 2!
