Gearlever wear and tear looks like the reason my Alpinestars will get replaced. They have a reinforced patch that is too far back for the gear lever and has worn through the join between patch and the rest of the boot. They'd probably lasted longer with out the patch!

Lace up boots: I've nearly dropped it when one of the laces of my DMs got caught and stopped my foot going down.

I think racers originally used them to soak up any brake fluid that would escape from the resevoir...
