The company made people redundant in November
They are not giving any payrises this year (nothing new there)

Are they creating a position for you just so they keep you or is a Senior Mgr needed?

Is the new company offering better career prospects even though you are taking a step back in role titles?

This is my take on your situation (correct me if I'm wrong):

You're unhappy where you are, you're overworked with little support. You're in a management type role (team leader). No-one at the company is getting a pay rise.

You get an offer to take a step back, less responsibility, more money. Only this offer means living the company & working with a group of people you don't know. It could be a case of out of the frying pan & into the fire.

Personally, I always choose enjoyment over money. If I enjoy the work, and I have enough money to put food on the table for everyone at home, I'll work for free! That said:

In your situation, I really don't see the choice. Your current MD has proposed that you can have more money, if you take on more responsibility (senior management), and has given a vague offer of more assistance so you're not over-worked any more. Is there a time frame for this offer of assistance? Is there any quantity of resources?

Sorry, but I'd be gone. Less responsibility, more money. Easier life.

I've taken side steps to get to where I am now, I've also taken steps down off the ladder. Back at college I was a software engineer by trade. I went "down" to the level of bar person & side stepped my way through being a DBA & then back to software engineer. This is what I'm happy doing, and I work for a good company. The money is irrelevant.

I have definately done too much over the last three years, missing both quantity and quality time with my family so I think you are right, If I move into management completely I will loose my techy skills within a year and thats what I enjoy the most. (although I'm a team leader its 90% hands on)

On the off chance that this also fails, I have been offered the job of donning a realistic monkey suit and working for peanuts - I know you'll be saying, "but we already pay you peanuts - and you don't have to wear a monkey suit!" Yes, you do indeed pay me peanuts and I don't have to wear a monkey suit. But our peanuts are of a much higher quality and the monkey suit is far less degrading than uniform. As a side note, the dominant male of the group is much more intelligent than yourself and is considerably more pleasant and humane.
As another side note, if you are interested in purchasing any donkeys, you're in luck. I have been breeding them recently for the sole purpose of familiarising myself with their stubborn, asinine faces. I had long taken it upon myself to mentally transpose a donkey face over your own during our conversations. When I did this, the clouds cleared and you appeared more credible. I have also taken to translating the inane garbage you spout into Donklyish, the language of the donkey (specifically the Ass dialect which is most similar to your own). Donklyish has the forgiving property of making everything you have said in it sound credible - even the most ludicrous of statements. As you can see, as I will be taking on some form of employment with a credible boss I no longer need the donkeys. They are available to a good home. Perhaps your company could employ them as managers? I think they would do a wonderful job and improve the company immensely.

My mind is made up at last, current place is giving me a new position slightly more £££ than the new place but if I look at it I won't be on the same salaries as the other senior managers, Yes I dont have the experience but I will still be underpaid for what I do then. Searching on google re: counteroffers all give the same results, some of them a script of what just happened here.

A senior management position will make finding employment in the same type of role harder as a lot of places is still ageist.....Im just 28.....+ little management experience and I will be sacrificing keeping my technical skills up to date.

My personal involvement --- ALWAYS taking work home with me, that won't change in the current place as I already do that and it will be difficult to change. I told my new emloyer part of the reason for leaving is to get a better work/home life balance.



Now I can start concentrating on fun things as I will be changing from fair weather riding to being an EVERYDAY COMMUTER.....Looking for some luggage options now to take my work clothes in.......can't quite get myself to put a top box on the pointy.

Started my new Job today......And unfortunately hated every minute of it, All I could think of was how do I resign in the first week and go and take the counter-offer from the other place.

Not sure if I'm too hasty, it's only been a day after all and my previous job took months to get used to, but my new boss's english vocab is so business like and full of "big and clever" words that I lose track of what he is talking about.

All this together with the fact of agonising back pain(fell of the bike saturday and must of pulled my back picking it up within a few seconds****just to save embarrasment****)

Now there's me again......confused like a blooooody chameleon on a smartybox

Give it time, perhaps your boss is just using such words to sound important and to assert his authority. You could end up lovin it, it may just take some time to get used to the envronment. Just don't make decisions to hastily.
