Yup, Freddie Mercury. They did 4 songs that day, the fourth being Queen's Stone Cold Crazy.

They did? Fantastic! Metallica's cover of that is brilliant, a real headbanger of a song!

Metallica opened the event with Enter Sandman, Sad but True anfd Nothing Else Matters. Later in the day Hetfield sang STC - the band was made up of the remaining members of Queen, and possibly Toni Iommi on guitar aswell.


I have seen Metallica lots when they were at their most popular (circa Black Album) but since St Inker (sorry...St Anger) I lost interest. Their music, lyrics and general appeal to me went down the pan. They should have been nicer to Jason Newstead...

They are playing Wembley Stadium today, supported by HIM

Woah, I cannot agree more. I went right off metallica after St Anger, and its only since saturday that I have experianced an overwhelming urge to thrash out their songs again, something I used to get almost everyday...

I also agree about jason newstead - IMO he was the perfect bassist for metallica, he was that link between the fans and the band as he was a big fan of metallica himself prior to joining. Metallica have gone downhill since newstead walked. Reading about some of the stuff, I dont blame him. He should have been given some more credit for the work on the songs, and given oppertunity to write songs of his own for the band.

I also blame Bob C....Rock for Metallica's form in the last decade...

Metallica have definitely fallen out of favour with me. "Load" was a decent album but it certainly wasn't Metallica. The least said about "Reload" and "St. Anger" the better...

Instead of getting better after the black album their music suffered in quality in the production area. It went downhill and it got to the lowest point in "St. Anger".

They lost their path, it seems that James´problems, Lars decreased interest in quality (not to mention his more than irritating whinging and diva attitude that shines oh so brightly in "Some Kind of Monster") and Jason's departure messed up the band´s collective psyche and it clearly shines in the god awful drum sound, lack of solos and crappy production.

I still have a spark of hope for them, but I´m not as keen as I was years ago.

Stopped listening to Metallica after the black album. The black album was oksy but was teh start of the delcine, Load, Reload, that orchestral thing....St Anger is not bad but nothing special & where are the solos!!!!!

Still, I enjoyed yesterday!

i agree with everyone's saying about metallica being rubbish after the black album and i was a bit concerned that the gig last night may have contained loads of the new rubbish and not enough of the fab old stuff. i needn't have worried, metallica were brilliant!

this Live Earth or whatever it was called had the desired affect by all accounts.

james blunt came on and 2 billion TV's were switched off simultaneously.

Many people on here slating Metallica, and we're all entitled to voice our opinions, land of free speech and all that. However, Ive just woken up after spending all day yesterday at Wembley seeing them and can honestly say they were ****ing amazing! Played loads of old stuff from Ride the Lightning, Kill em All, Master of Puppets etc which the crowd reacted to as you can imagine. So much so that all I saw when they played Puppets was arms and legs everywhere as most of the front few rows where I was got whipped up in the pit. ACE!

Also, they have binned off Bob Rock for production of their new album, due out in Feb apparently, so should sound more like they used to hopefully. Cant be any worse than St. Anger now really can it!

Think the comments about Newstead/Trujillo are a bit harsh. Anyone who was there yesterday and saw Trujillos solo right before Orion will know what Im on about. That was fantastic.

Think Trujillo's a great bass player....but I HATE bass solos. They're almost as bad as drum solos.

As stated earlier I think that the decline of Metallica happened around the time of the black album. You can see it happen on the Binge & Purge DVD set. The Justice for all dvd contains loads of songs, a little banter with the crowd, a guitar solo (hooray) & a bass solo (boo).

The Black album dvd contains loads of songs some with audience participation (i.e. the mircophone in the crowd for Seek & Destroy GROAN), a guitar solo (hooray), a bass solo (boo) a drum solo (please kill me) & a comedy drum solo by Jaymze (seriously, please kill me).

Still, they've got the groove back again! Hooray!
