Well I am sure it will all turn out nice in the end . The K3 does indeed have a higher subframe at the back (which is why I bought one) K4 models onwards share a lower subframe . Shame about the bike but maybe a blessing in disguise as you got more money for it , enjoy the hunt for a new bike and make a profit on the curvey parts , quids in I reckon .

Who says its a writeoff anyway, surely the insurance are not involved since someone else binned it.

I took it to my mechanics (who I trust implicitly) and all three of them agreed that it was a write-off and unrepairable. I am not getting insurance involved at all as there is no point.
I'm still friends with the guy, but have decided not to trust people so much any more and be quite so generous!

Now I am confused about whether I should get a curvy or a pointy...if I get a pointy, I would really like to put my scorpion titanium can on (as that is still pristine!). I assume I just need to get a new link pipe, or is it more complicated than that?

should just need a link pipe, there's nothing about the can that would make it specific for pointy or curvy, or likely any other bike for that matter
