Lots of different jobs, but I've had 2 careers. Just before I turned 30 I switched from being an investment advisor (stock broker) to an Oracle Database Admin. Originally I'd hoped to be in marine or mechanical engineering -funny how life turns out...

wood work has always been what i've done, did sign writing and engraving whilst on study leave for me GCSE's (yep exams were important to me ) got bored of that pretty quickly and finally got an apprenticeship in traditional boat building and marine engineering, although i enjoyed it and my place of work (you got properly beasted when you messed but that's the trade and it was really in a lovely place) it was about 30 miles away in lymington and with the bike i had at the time it took me forkin hours to get to and from work, i started looking nearer home for somewhere to continue my apprenticeship but could only get into joinery which is what i did (a big regret i have).

finished my apprenticeship a few months back then got laid off, i have been called back to work on Tuesday but i really really don't want to go and seeing as my time is served im thinking of going elsewhere, i would like to get back into boat building as now i have the means to travel more easily but there's not much call for traditional boat building so thinking of a complete career change.

but would this be considered a waste seeing as I've just spent the past 4 years working to get my trade?

i know this whole recession sh!te is going on but.... im 20, no mortgage, not really and out goings or commitments so i think what the heck
Mate ur 20 with no commitments, u have already learned one skill that will surely always give some kind of job somewhere, why not learn another one.

If i could go back i would have never left school and i would have done college and uni. but i threw all my eggs in one basket and it didnt work out.

So basically u have already got your finger in one pie, so why not have another one?

What u thinking of doing?

my older bro changed career when he was about 26, he did 5 years of open uni and now he is a building surveyor, from being a manager at Sainsburys.

Wa chip shop manager at 18 did that for a few years til I was 21 then joined securicor as a van driver, then hgv driver then forklift driver and supervisor then hgv driver again.

Got fed up with all that and retrained as a plumber, now run my own business. Doesn't pay huge amounts yet but is enough to see us alright plus I get to work the hours I want leaving me more time to spend with the kids and kitkat .

TBH i cant see myself doing anything else, im an outdoor person, mechanics just gets me stressed..... im a hand on bloke not a brain bloke.

gona give boat building another shot, requires constant concentration so kept you on your toes and your constantly always learning and improving the way you do things, stop the learning and you get lazy and routed

Its amazing how wrong School teachers are, I got an E in my Maths coursework, still managed to pull off a C in total, still was not very good at maths, nor was I at English and look what I'm doing now...

I meet clients, write letters, and I'm pretty nifty with some growth projections...

Hope they are more accurate than the ones I've always had!

Yep, done that!

Was a retail manager for a long time, but after my brother died it made me totally re-assess my life. I realised I might be earning lots of money, but I never saw my kids and was working a 60 hour week. I threw it all in to work in a factory and never regretted it. Don't earn anywhere near as much money, but when I walk out the door at the end of the day my job stays behind!
