Oh aye, I'm sure yours is the better bike... But since you buy a Ducati with your heart not your head anyway I don;t htink that'd make the slightest bit of difference

Well, I can dream...

You are correct Northwind,it seems crazy that buying Italian you do have to accept that maybe you are not in for the kind of trouble free ownership that you become accustomed to by having excellent Japanese machinery.
After all I do love Jap I just got to the point were I thought I would try something a little diferent.

Haxsaw I have to say that for your daily usage the 749 is not the best bike at all! She is not a commuter and you will find yourself getting cooked by the heat coming off the motor.I would suggest that is a total mismatch of needs and wants also.(Sorry just my opinion!)

The clutch? Well I am used to it by now and although a touch heavier than the norm, there is no requirement for Popeye type forearms at all.

That's why it's called Personal Taste.

You can't really compare a 749S and CityX, they are two very different bikes, completely different riding styles and power delivery.

As has been said it depends what you want from your bike.

I bet you'll love the CityX, it's a hoot to ride.

Can't comment on the 749S as I haven't had the pleasure of riding one.
I believe that opinions were asked for - I gave mine !!
One would assume that Haxsaw is past the "do I like the look of it" stage but rather have real world experience opinions of reliability, rideability, running costs, insurance, etc. You'd hardly ask for opinions if you thought the thing was pug ugly.

On the flipside, I can imagine getting really fed up with hanging on for dear life on the CityX if I decide to go on any longer rides or have to house-sit for parents again, which results in a 30-mile commute each way.

Problems, problems.....
I found the Ducati clutch really heavy at first and it caused some pain in my hand for a few days. But I quickly got used to it and didn't really notice it. You just develop stronger left-arm muscles!

I rode an early Buell and you really did have to hang on for dear life. It felt as if the bike was going to get away from under me every time I opened the throttle. The more recent models didn't seem to have this problem. I haven't tried a City X though.

It really is the practicality (is this a word?) aspects that put me off the 749 but (there's always a but!) I can cycle to work (which I quite regularly do anyway) and I'm not a stranger to stupid ideas - sold my fairly sensible car and built myself a Westfield. This has been my only car for over two years and I used to have to drive to work in it every day, whatever the weather

Guess the test rides will tell all....

(I reckon the SV knows it could be on it's way out coz it's being really nice at the moment and riding like a dream )
