I agree with you about horses (see my earlier post) but a car's width isn't necessarily enough. The mare that went for me last week was at least a car's width away and still almost had me.
Did you have any mints in your pockets? They can smell them from miles away.

Yep, almost been trampled by about 5 ponies who could smell polo's in my pocket as I crossed open land. By the way, you can't outrun ponies.

I like horses. Used to have one when I lived in Canada although we never had any reason to ride her on the road as the farm she was stabled at was surrounded by fields... and then some.

I like to see horses on the road but do think that maybe SOMETHING should be set up/funded so that they're cleaned up after.

As for spooking, well, they're animals. Treat them as if they're going to spook. You wouldn't go into the mountains and expect a bear to not come and try to nick your food if it smelled it.

Animals are great.

I have to disagree I don't think horses should be allowed on the road.

Fair enough they where on the roads hundreds of years but slavery was around then too and we don't do that now.

How can you say its fair to climb on the back of a poor animal an make it face things it obviously does not like? A bike/car is built for a purpose to go on a tarmac road.

I have this argument all the time with my wife and her family because they have horses.

lol, a typical response from a non-rider. Riding a horse is nothing like that, my horse loved going out and about and as soon as he saw me he would come rushing over and practically drag me to the tack room so I could saddle up and get going.

I never said I hadn't been on a horse. I didn't even say you should not ride a horse although I don't rave about it.

My point was riding it in places its going to feel uncomfortable. Such as a busy road. Like I said my wife, mother in-law and niece ride horses they just don't try and scare them half to death on busy roads and leave steaming piles of crap on corners.

Wild Mustang now they are truly happy horses :P

Apologies if you have been riding, I just get that response a lot from people who have never ridden and just got a bit sick of it. I agree that riding horses in busy and built up areas is stupid and dangerous, I wouldn't dream of riding in a city and I've only been on roads where I've absolutely haven't had any other choice.

Has anyone been in Hyde Park on a lovely sunny busy Sunday? Lots of inexperienced riders on nice horses mixed in with lots and lots of pedestrians, cyclists, cars, skaters etc. And people wonder why there are so many accidents! Personally, I think built up areas are no place for horses.
