I think the most sound piece of advice my riding instructors gave us was to "buy the best cheap stuff you can afford" You're more likely to replace a £150 helmet that you drop or knock off the top of the bike or whatever than a £300 shoei or Arai. I bought a good mid-range Shark helmet, and its been brilliant. (the blue one before you all shout that I'm "such a girl"!)

no offence but that sounds like stupid advice, my instructor taught me never to blance my lid on the bike or anything it could drop off. And in 2 years of riding so far so good.
My advice would be by the best fitting helmet you can afford, I always go for the lightest too and with dring fastenings but that's just me.

I take your point, and they did advised obviously to buy the best fitting helmet that you can. But I also think they have a point about buying cheaper.
A friend of mine spent £500 on a helmet, which he had in his car, someone totalled his car by driving into the side of it, the helmet was sent flying across the car, and more than likely has damaged to it that can't be seen on the outside of it, BUT he's still using it because "It cost £500..." If that had been my £150 helmet I'd have replaced it, had it been my £300 Arai, possibly not? I dunno. A cheap helmet goes through the same tests as they expensive ones, they do the same job, and depending how well they fit you, depends on what you buy. |

I suppose and I get your point but in the same way I was well displeased when I bought my £150 (rrp £230, although the price is reasonably irrelevant moneys money safety's safety) BMW sport integral helmet then 3 days later smashed it. I even wrote to bmw to try and sponge a freebie. I took some comfort when the doctor said 'If it hadn't have been such a close fitting helmet it probably would have spun and broke your neck'...the one I ditched for the beamer flapped about like a binbag!

Don't sit the helmet on the bike either as it could fall and do damage to the helmet. Not good if you've just bought a 300 lid. Always carry your helmet in the bag, thats what its for.
