There are advantages to belt driev, modern kevlar belts are tough, durable, quiet, don't corrode in the wet, require no maintainance and last longer than a poorly maintained chain.
The fact they make the bike no faster, not much lighter, and require a fair ammount of effort to change tends to put people off changing from chains.

I've had a couple of Harley 883's with belt drive in my childhood.
I'm a great fan of belt. It's smoother, quieter, clean, and if stone guards are in place, will outlast a chain. 40,000 miles plus. And if it breaks it doesn't take out your crankcases like a chain could. Or worse! Yep you have to take out the swinging arm to fit it, but as I use standard Suzuki endless chains, so do I. They do need adjustment , but not nearly as often, unless you use the tensioner pulley ala Buell.. Gearing changes are a problem though. If Harley can make them work on 250kg plus machines, it should be ok on our lightweights. Think the Japs don't use them much because of the crappy machines that have worn them in the past. So it could outlive 3 chain and sprocket changes and save on lube and rear wheel cleaning. Not so expensive after all. If only something could be done to minimize the rear pulley. |
