As you mentioned though, if the other side of the road is empty, I'd be right over there by the opposite kerb. It feels weird at first if you never do it, but I have to confess in all my life I've never seen a kerb pull a u-turn on someone and take them out. Best bet is to always ride as far away from those moving objects as you can - junctions are another example, if I am coming up to a junction on the left, with a car waiting to pull out (left or right, but right is obviously a tad worse as there is less space to go into), I will move over to the right as far as I can - why give the car the opportunity to do something stupid, etc etc? |

Another tip when filtering is to keep a close look on wing mirrors and front wheels. Generally when a car is going to do a U turn out of a line of stationery traffic the first thing the driver does is wind on a whole load of right hand lock. You would be amazed how easy it is to see a hand move in a mirror, the movement should catch your eye, and it's the first clue the driver is doing something, and obviously if you see a car with full right lock applied you are going to slow down, give them some room and cover the horn....aren't you?

Sorry to hear of your incident, Hovis. Hope it won't affect your
insurance too much. I am not too sure about the legal position. If the driver admits his fault it is all you need. |

I was filtering past the same jam yesterday I think, closed road from the A470 to Caerphilly issue? A bint did exactly the same to me but I just stopped thank God. Stressed car drivers make terrible decisions. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Glad your okay H, very nasty that snarle up the other day, you may have passed me sitting in my car.
I'm not saying you did anything wrong H, I believe it to be totally the car drivers fault. I been involved one of these, I didn't fall off either, but it left me and bike embedded in a hedge the other side of the road. There are strategies that you can use to reduce the likelihood of an impact. If there's nothing coming the other way use the opposing lane to best effect, get out well beyond the arc of an opening door. This occurs more often than the U-turn, just so the driven can stand up to see how long the queue is. From this position you can see drivers right arm, if it's at or moves to the top of the steering wheel - more care needed. Look at the front offside wheel as Red has said. Drivers often give an instinctive shoulder check a microsecond before the U'ee, they look but don't see. Also be careful of the car that's moved well to the left (in the gulley) as this is often a prelude to the U'ee to ensure a 3 point turn isn't needed, this is a particular nasty "trap" as from a bikers view it looks like an invite to overtake. Good luck with getting the bike fixed, certainly before September. ![]() |
