I asked catherine in private as I don't like situations with lots of other people watching, the wedding was hard being center of attention.

I used a ring made out of a piece of corn from the field we were in, she loved it, we then went straight into town to buy her ring and spent the rest of the afternoon together just having fun shopping.

My advice, use the harribo ring for sure, but plan a day shopping with her to buy it, not lets pop into town and pick any ring.

As for the birthday. maybe do it at the party but alone with her, then announce it to the group, or let her announce it, that way the asking is private but the celebration is hers, also is she th ekind of person to think he only asked on my birthday because he couldn't think of another pressie?

I'd go with this. Or, just do the best you can - buy a ring that you like and you think she'd like and that suits her - but go for a jeweller that will allow you to bring it back and swap if she doesn't like it. Ask around at jewellers and see what they say. It's probably not particularly uncommon.

Mind you I'd still do the jelly ring as a joke before producing the real one.

I think you should walk into the party, fart loudly and announce "you gonna marry me or not wench?". Winner everytime. If she enquires about a ring, laugh.

Haribo ring is a great idea, if it's a joke you share!

Why not do it before the party, when she is getting ready. Get a ring box and put the haribo inside it. You could just say its a pair of earings for her birthday. Then you have double the reason to get plastered! She can announce it to her friends and family at the party if she wants to.

In private with the jelly ring. When I proposed to my wife I had printed a picture off of a ring I thought she would like, but didn't buy one as I wanted to go and choose one with her from the jewellery quarter in Birmingham. Good job I didn't buy one before she tried it on - she has very small dainty fingers and I would never have got the size right!
