Looming... If a small object travels directly towards you, it's harder to see and to accurately judge the closing speed, than a larger object. The effect is reuced if you avoid riding directly at people- the greater the angle of deflection between you and the driver, the more visibile you are.

So for example, if you have someone in a junction on your left, riding on the left of the lane will amplify this effect. However, riding in teh right will reduce it. Riding from the left of your lane to the right will reduce it further still (as well as positioning you better to avoid getting carred.)
