Default Microsoft Exchange, an iPhone 3G and a regular pop3 email account... Tech heads of the org, hook me up plz

Issue Resolved - Mods, feel free to delete this

Just got an iPhone 3g last week (so far I'm well impressed, and having internet wherever I go is very handy what with working away alot recently).

So I'm just wondering what's the deal with microsoft exchange? I've had a read through the product info on Microshaft's website and it sounds like I'll have to setup an exchange server or host my email directly within exchange on said server?

I've currently got a bog standard pop3 account with easily (who also do my website hosting). I'm trying to fathom whether it's possible to get my pop3 to talk to exchange?

Or am I missing something so simple, such as bashing your pop3/smtp details into exchange, and then you log the exchange details on your iPhone?

Any info on this is greatly appreciated

oh and I also appreciated that some people love/hate either windows/apple etc but take it to the megathread if you wanna discuss iStuff versus smartphones

As far as I am aware, only Blackberry have the ability to talk to an Exchange Server.

There IS something called Exchange Web Accessm that I have heard of but dont know how it works, or if its even part of the current Exchange server build.

Hope this helps.

Nokia do an exchange push service too which works very well with their E series.

Exchange web access (outlook web acess/owa) works well on a good few web browsers too.

But that's all beside the point, you're just looking to hook into a pop/smtp account on teh interwebs. Can't see why it shouldn't manage it, my rusty old Sony T610 can just about manage that. I'll see if I can't dig out some iphone instructions.

well I've got my gmail account already setup piece of pish just bang in your email address and password and it's right there native in the email system of the phone - no messing with browsers etc.

On the email setup screen there's all the branded options for:
Microsoft Exchange
MobileMe (formerly .Mac)
Google Mail
Yahoo Mail
AOL
and "Other"

I should probably really have a look in other, since I've not really noticed it yet for I am a dunce. thanks for the replies SK and MM

You can recieve Push email on the iphone. My boss has it for his work email. I was going to suggest that you just set up normal email on the iphone and get it to poll your inbox every half hour.

cheers viney, I've never come across the term of "Push email" until I received the iPhone. I've now got pop3 working directly into the phone (and conveniently, it leaves a copy of the email on the server til I access with outlook from my computer).

So what's the difference between push and standard? (I sense a "let me google that for you" coming up)

just wiki'd it... sounds like I should be fine with the way it's currently set up. You can set it to "fetch" every 15, 30 or 60 mins, as well as manually... Cracking piece of kit especially after putting up with a sony k800i which was amazing for the first 9 months then it completely went ghey and vodafone didn't give a shizzle. A phone that works is a godsend, a phone with proper internet and email capabilities is out of this world for me

You have an "iProduct" yet dont seem to think the word "ghey" applies to it.......................
