Default bike standing for 5 years - issues?

Not an SV but the principle is obviously the same.

Looking at a little Honda CB1 for the missus as her second bike after the 125 but it's been standing for 5 years.

Now i've had three of these bikes before so know them like the back of my hand. I will need to:

Change the fork seals and fork oil
Strip and clean the carbs
Clean the inside of the tank
Change the oil, filter and possibly the plugs.
Change the battery
Probably change the chain

5 years is a very long time. Is there any more serious damage i should be considering?

Cheers

Stu

I'm guessing it's very cheap?

All the stuff you've said, plus tyres and the brakes will probably need doing too and brake fluid too.

Has it been inside? watch out for rats and other beasties when you're doing the carbs once found a bat.

Check the brakes and bleed and flush the system, as well as the cooling system if it's watercooled. Oh and you'd probably want to change the tyres, as 5 years is the life expectancy of a tyre, at best.. more like 3-5.

You want to take all the plugs out and make sure the engine will turn over by hand - either via the back wheel in top gear or a spanner on the crank. One or more valves could have stuck in the guides leading to piston/valve contact.

Calipers will need attention as well and could be seized, bounce the rear and check the swingarm pivot and rear shock linkage, engines ae fairly robust as long as some oil was left in there.

Cheers Mark.

infact possibly worth flushing the engine too before putting the new oil in.

was just going to say that. If they've been stood in one spot...there will be one hell of a flat spot
