Default e-book readers

Has anyone tried or got an e-book reader? Mrs. Rod is a great reader of rubbish books, and is getting into e-books more, so I'm thinking of getting her one of these new-fangly e-book readers. Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated!

The only draw back for them, I see, is that I like to give books that Iv'e enjoyed to friends before dropping them off at the charity shop....I'm not likely to loan a Kindle to a friend...!

Conversion? I was under the impression that you just loaded your gear on and that was it? Slow how, turning pages? Does it have this e-ink or whatever, and is it any good? Do I know anything? No!
