K&N filter - SV650.org

Can someone tell me what difference a K&N might make to my bike? It is a k5 with a ccc on it.

It is all about getting more oxygen into the cylinders, if you increase the mass of oxygen in the cylinder you can burn more fuel, if you burn more fuel you can get more power. A K&N filter allows a greater flow of air through it, when compared to the standard filter. When combined with a free flowing exhaust the whole process of air in and exhaust out (scavenging) is improved, that means that more of the exhaust gas is replaced with fresh air and hence more oxygen.

In practice it won't make a significant amount of difference.

Here's the trick- if it did make a lot of difference, you'd give yourself running issues

IMO K&N know this fine well, which is why most of their stock replacement filters aren't much better (if any) than standard. But that's just my opinion

Yeah I had my concerns about changing the can in case it messed up the fuelling and I am sure a filter would just make that worse?

Although someone suggested it in another thread I don't believe the ECU in the SV K5 will alter the fuelling to compensate. It's a fixed setting isn't it and can't even adjust the timing to optimise higher octane fuels like many a car ECU?

Personally I am gonna look for a can that is louder, legal and DOESN'T claim to improve performance. The filter will remain standard.

Spot on, the ECU in an SV doesn't have a lambda sensor, so it won't correct for changes in the a/f mix. SV has extremely stupid FI. Shame...

What about a Quill? Got one, road legal, and a lovely sound. Quill claim that it doesn't need the bike to be re-tuned.

Has also now stopped backfiring as much.

I also fitted a Kand N to my K3 when I fitted a CCC.The increase in air flow via the filter alone is frankly minimal,however the K and N is pretty much a lifetime item and could work out as an economical option.I also de snorkeled my bike to allow a larger amount of air through to the air box.

BTW the induction noise with the snorkel removed is infectiously lovely!

My ccc has never back fired once...
