Default Sprockets

Using Renthals ratio table i'm thinking of changing to a 16 front and a 44 back sprocket as mine are definately on the way out. According to the table i'll get a higher top end, not particularly bothered about and slower acceleration . I'm doing it to get a bit better fuel consumtion as she's guzzling a tank every 130 miles at best. looking at having it set up properly in the summer.

Main questions are:

Has anyone got this setup ??
Does it knock that much off acceleraation or isn't it really noticable.

Don't know what's on at the minute but i don't think they're stock.

Er, 130 miles at best is about right to be honest, as for knocking the gearing down, its not going to make that much difference. I tried a 16 on the front, and it was horrible. But that is me, and this is you. I dont see that it can do any harm.

It's only going to really make a huge difference if you're in top gear a lot of the time and revving fairly high, other than that chainging up early will have much the same effect. Just a thought

theoretically the 16 front should help, but in reality not by much if you ride the bike normally, mind you you should get better ware from the chain.

Cheers Mark.

I think it'd be a mistake. You won't get a higher top speed as the SV's engine hasn't the power to rev that high so you'll never get anywhere near the red line. As Viney says, 130 is about right. If you want to conserve on fuel then just throttle back.

I run a 16/44 on a curvy SVS.

It puts the gears up by almost exactly half a ratio, so your new 5th gear is half way between what was 5th and 6th, and new 6th is "6 1/2th"

The new 6th is a nice cruising gear, almost an overdrive, but it does mean you tend to use 4th and 5th more than before, so the economy barely changes overall.

I wouldn't suggest it if purely for economy, but I like the relaxed cruising feel. Also I never now try for 7th gear, whereas I often did on std gearing.

I used 16/45 on my Sv and didn't notice any change in fuel consumption

going to 16t in front won't give you anymore top end with an SV, it ain't got the omph to over come the wind resistance

I actually can go faster in 5th gear than I can 6th

I run 16/46 on ny nekid 99 and a 112 link chain, I run this configuration to keep the front wheel on the ground. it also means I don't have to shift as much, it's not really any slower in acceleration, you can stay in each gear longer

I run an oem gsxr front sprocket, it's 16t, fits the SV and has the rubber sound damper unlike aftermarket sprockets that are a little noisier

I,ve got a pointy sk4 model and was wondering if these are fitted with rev limiters or not. just wondering because I've had a 142 on the clock at the red line and was'nt sure if there was a rev limiter cutting in!

Only done this speed the once, I think I'd prefer to go the other way and have better acceleration, much more fun IMO.

Yes there's a rev limiter, just try it out in one of the lower gears and you'll see .
