Okay I want to change the front sprocket from a 15 tooth to a 14, havent got a manual and am wondering if its a simple case of putting the bike into 1st gear and then using a breaker bar to unlock the nut or do I have to lock the back wheel with a piece of wood.

youll prob have to lock the back wheel with a bit of wood, they can be pretty darn tight, apart from that easy enough to do, cant remember if you have to take apart the gear linkage to get to the nut properly though, someone will be along in a minute to confirm........

And when you take the clutch mechanism off, make sure the ball bearings don't go everywhere!

Yup. Also helps if you have the back wheel still on and chain intact and somebody is standing on the back brake. I also reused my tab washer, just re peened the other end over. Easy enough if there is two of you.

I needed a full yard-an-a-bit long breaker bar with a thick piece of wood in the bcak wheel - first one was about 2 inch square and it broke. Shows how tight the bugger is (and it has thread locking compound on). Take care when you put such a big force on the bar though - one slip and you could break your fingers, or worse, scratch your bike!

Mine was 'kin tight, ended up going to a mate and using an impact air-wrench which spun it off easy as anything.

Is it a right hand thread? I took my rear wheel off last night - to get a puncture repaired. Used a lump hammer on the socket bar to break the stiction. Is the same 'procedure' suitable for the front sprocket nut?

Yes, it's anti-clockwise to undo. Pete recommends using an extension on a breaker bar, thinks there would be too much bounce using a lump hammer.

Don't put it into first, put it into top. Then get a mate (if you have one handy) to stand on the brake lever. My gearbox sprocket nut was loose when I changed the sprocket - just the tab washer stopping it from unwinding.
