Compared to what?
your average car? power to weight, then I can see how a car driver would think so, it'll out perform most of the tin boxes in just about every real world situation. your average bike? well taking into consideration, the feet forwards, traillies, commuters, then yes it is (just). your average "SS" (Supersport) bike then No. so much depends on your point of view, if you match it against something like a Bros 650 (bit long in the tooth now) or as our overseas friends call it, the GT Hawk, it's revy & peeky and not the torque machine people believe (the Honda is a much nicer engine around town, but the SV will kill it on top end). I think the fact that it plays it's own game so well, is the reason it's compared to more expensive "SS" class machines by those in the biking world, which is saying something. So I'd say overall it's not, but probably "best of the rest" would be fair. Cheers Mark.

I think it's a bike, thus to a certain extent it's 'sporty', (whatever that's actually taken to mean - discuss).
I think 70 BHP used to be quite a bit - but nowadays it isn't. Powerful? Powerful enough certainly - anything that will do 120+mph clearly has more power than you actually need, although of course you may want more. But as a description 'Powerful Sports Bike' is inaccurate when applied to the SV650, not because it's necessarily technically incorrect, but simply because it was used as an emotive term by a journalist who was very clearly attempting to persuade those who do not have knowledge of motorcycles, that what they were looking at was some fire breathing, time warping, certain death excess machine - (which it isn't BTW). The BBC - telling you what to think, not giving you facts from which to make your own mind up, just watch the news for evidence of this. Still, they make the best dramas though, just watch the news for evidence of this.

My old diesel Seat Leon would do 120 mph, and it was not classed as "powerful".

By definition it must be a sports bike to some degree, as it competes in motorsport successfully - minitwins etc, and by the same notion Honda CB 500s (they have/had their own series) must also be sports bikes. However I agree that they are not powerful examples of the breed.

Yep, as lawnmowers go they are very sporty!
I think the SV could be described in standard trim as "sporty", but not high performance! In the same way a Honda Blackbird is probably less sporty than an SV, but is much more high performance. Not that any of this matters really. Last edited by Tim in Belgium; 17-05-07 at 09:56 AM. |

To non-bikers, yes, as it would whip most cars (and drivers) in most places on the road within semi-legal speeds.
To bikers, no, because we all know there are plenty more powerful (and sportier) bikes out there. |
