I try not to speed, you know, I tend to keep it to around about 70-80, but on my way home from work it just helps to burn stress on the long clear stretches of road. I can usually see police about and I keep my speeding to within a reasonable level because it's not nice to take the ****, really.

Might want to pop over here and have a read.
As soon as I saw the car (hidden behind bushes, and at an angle off the road) I jammed on the anchors. This was the same stretch of road that a certain Patrick Kielty has just received a £1200 fine & 6 points for doing the same speed.

A75 between Castle Douglas and Springholm for anyone that knows the area.

It's at the bottom of a long hill, wide open road (normal lane + crawler lane up the hill in the opposite direction) and there wasn't another car in sight.

I feel sick to the core now, haven't been able to sleep since I got home either. If they decide to throw the book at me for this, which the courts down here have a reputaion for doing, then I'm screwed. Big time.

I work 11 miles out of town, no buses etc. There's a very very likely case that without my license I could lose my job, that took me years and years of studying and working to get.

All that for one quick blip of the throttle on my way home after a 100+ mile run.

Sickening, yet it's only me to blame & I think that's probably the worst part of it all.

Either on video or laser gun?
It was one of the 'Hairdryer' guns.

No, I've got my full license (for now.....) so the bike's not restricted.

I once asked a copper handling of those 'hairdryers' to point the damn thing on me just so I could see how accurate my speedo was....yeah, I like to live dangerously

The guy wasn't keen to do so. What's the problem officer? I'm the one taking the risk, no? His reason was because it was very difficult to get a reading off motorbikes. Well, knock me down with a feather.....

Those frigging things lie like hell and only a lying or ignorant officer will swear blind that they are accurate.....whilst looking straight into your eyes.

Ben
I asked whether the gun had a certificate of calibration, they showed me a sticker on the side showing when it was last tested and due for a re-test. It was within this period.

Is it 'possible' that I was doing 101? Yes, it's possible, in that my bike is capable and I was speeding, but seriously unlikely.

So you were caught doing 40mph over the limit.

TBH, it all depends on how confident the officer was of his equipment. I know of some laser guns that require DAILY calibration, and as such, they're pretty much useless. I know of one specific gun that often says a cast iron gate is doing 30mph whilst mounted to the wall!

I was stopped not that long ago for doing 59mph in a 40, 19mph over the limit. Anything over 16mph (IIRC) above the limit should result in a court appearence. But again, this is down to the officer largely.

In my case, I was caught in rather thick fog from 400m away!! I knew full well that his "lock" wouldn't of been brilliant, but as soon as I saw him I knew I was getting stopped. So I slowed to let him catch up, then made it obvious I knew he was behind me, and pulled over where safe. I then had a nice chat with him, he showed me the laser results etc, took my licence, told me about some unmarked cars in the area (including number plates) & sent me on my way.

I knew if it resulted in court action, I'd most likely have him over a barrel due to inaccurate hardware in poor visibility, so I was nice & polite.

I got an SP30 (3 points £60 fine).

Moral of the story: Know your ground for when you get stopped, and act accordingly.

Did the officer say you'd be appearing in court, or just that you may "loose your licence"? Also, did you admit to the offence?

Get legal advice. I can recommend White Dalton, who specialise in motoring offences and bikers in particular. All thier briefs and barristers have bike licences, they won't employ one who doesn't.

Been reading that poo site, have a look at this link: http://www.pepipoo.com/Inaccurate_speed_cameras.htm

UK Speed Trap Guide

Steve Warren at the UK Speed Trap Guide has been playing with his own radar gun and has obtained some very interesting results.
"1, pointing it at a sign, no speed until a lorry thunders by, the vibration gave me readings
2, pointing it at a speaker with music or voice playing, speeds of 100 mph plus
The results we came upon was that any vibration caused spoof readings.
So to test it further, we mounted a metal plate on a speaker, turned up the volume and drove past the gun at 30mph with the boot open and the speaker pointing back, the gun gave speeds of over 100 mph.
A badly vibrating number plate also gave us spook readings.
Seems that any vibration will affect radar. It could be as simple as a metallic object on your car vibrating and upsetting the gun.
Lorries with flat backs will also give odd readings and the police have confirmed this when they sent a NIP to a driver that knew he was doing 2mph but they said he was over the 30 mph limit. They then agreed that they have a problem."
I know mine vibrates quite a lot!

Yes but what evidence did he show you?

+1 to getting a good solicitor or even Barrister if anything comes of it

If it was the same as I got, I'd imagine a brief look at the gun, explanation of the readings, and maybe a flash of the calibration sticker.
