Default Advice please

I have had a look through the threads and can't seem to find anything for my problem.

I have a 2000 W reg curvey S with ART can, Datatool system 3.

I was out today and after a couple of hours about 100 miles I stopped for fuel. When I went back to bike it would not start. I managed to bump start the bike and all was ok. I noticed that the speedo and rev counter was going haywire so I swithched off my lights and everything appeared to be normal. When I got back one of my mates adjusted the idle speed as he said it was running a bit fast (2000rpm). My bike was switched off and left for a while and when I went back to it, it started no problem.

The problem seems to be when I am riding for any length of time with my lights on (necessary for safety) as it doesn't appear to have any effect when the lights are off.

Any suggestions would be greatly received. Please bear in mind I am not in any way mechanically minded so please try and explain any checks you think I may have to do in simple talk.

Thanks in advance.

Lol indeed.

Yeah that sounds like a likely suspect, if you've got a voltmeter then check what it's charging at.

That's where you get to the battery as if you're charging it, but put the voltmeter set to "0-20 DCV" or something like that across the terminals, with the bike running.

there'll be a setting for DC voltage, probably with different ranges. I think mine does 0-2000mV 0-20V 0-200V and 0-2000V

You are looking for about 13--15 volts DC across the battery terminals with engine running at about 5000RPM and the lights on.So set the meter up to cover that range. If you dont get that come back for further advice-------?

Update

I've just checked the battery and th eresults as follows:

Idle - lights off - 13.61
Idle - Lights on - 13.52

Lights off 5000 revs - 13.34
Lights on 5000 revs - 13.13

Does that make any sense to anyone?

Any help is greatly appreciated as I plan to go to the Glencoe Massacre (Scottish Forum) and want to make sure my bike is ok as I don't want it packing up on me.

Thanks
