Its a the NSL - National Speed LIMIT, not the NST - National Speed TARGET. The Speed Limit for the Nation is 60, with the exception of Motorways where its 70. When you go into a town an exception is made, reducing it to 30 for the part of the road that matches the description of what should be a 30 - ie built up with street lights etc, the sign at the end of this area is just cancelling the lowered limit. Just because a bit of road says you can drive as fast as 60, doesn't mean that you HAVE to do 60.

Yes there are a lot of spanners about, but what can you do... drop the limit to stop them hurting themselves? ... Oh f##k that's what they are doing...

You drive to the conditions and the ability to see the road ahead. You are trying to legislate for stupidity - which seems to be the way these days. I suggest you send your CV to Wacky Jacqui and see if she has a job for you. Speed limit signs before and after every "tricky" bit of road for the Hard of Thinking - no thanks. Oh and some countries (NZ and the US spring to mind) DO routinely mark the recommended speed for deceptive corners (as well as putting up the kind of markers we do) but they are guides rather than limits.

It's a stupid idea from a ministry that just want to pass the buck.
Driver error accounts for more accidents than anything else. If they really wanted the roads to be safer they'd train people more thoroughly and penalise people who drive dangerously, not target without thought people that make a concious decision to break a speed limit because it blatantly is safe to do so. If airline pilots were crashing all the time, they'd probably do something about pilot training standards. It's like how a massive percentage of motorcycle crashes (involving no other vehicle) are a result of running wide out of a corner because they turned in too early (I forget where I read/heard that). How will a 50mph limit affect that, or help anybody? It won't, but the DVLA seems to want to do anything but accept responsibility for the poor standard of driving on our roads. You gave us our licenses!! |

But that isn't going to make much money is it?

The point Magnum makes is a good one. So often you come out of a village and theres a NSL sign, closely followed by a tight and difficult bend, often with a farm entrance, cattle poo across the raod, every type of hazard imaginable. It's not drivers who don't think. In these circumstances it's the man from the Ministry - or more likely, the Man from the Council - who hasn't really thought about the ideal place for the NSL sign. Why place a NSL sign, which most drivers will react to by increasing speed - we all do - only to have to brake again only a very short distance later. It makes no sense. Now you'll say that I should be thinking ;'is this safe' - and of course, I do go through that thought process - but why doesn't Man from the Ministry/Council recognise the hazards, and extend the speed restriction? Just because the houses have stopped doesn't mean to say that the hazards assoociated with a village have stopped too. |
