Where would you put the bike if you only have a flat?

House for me. According to Alain de Botton commuting (both the experience and time lost) is one of the main things that has a negative effect of people's happiness and hence you should either move closer to work (and accept a smaller/worse living space) or work in a lesser-paid job nearer to home. I agree this is true for most of Joe Public, but if you ride to work and consequently feel neutral about it or actually even enjoy the commute, this goes out the window.

For me riding, even in lashing rain, so I have control over the bike and the (inevitable) associated problems is vastly prefereable. The alternative; putting my fate in the hands of a faceless organisation who give the impression of not giving a flying **** whether or not I reach my destination at all, never mind on time or in any degree of comfort is not something that appeals to me.

On a bike in pi$$ing rain/snow/hail is still far more comfortable than being on a train like some sort of cattle.

Alain de bottons obviously never ridden a bike.

my auntie has a beautiful house in ipswich, suffolk (i know i know oxymoron and all that), and commutes into london everyday. she used to have a flat in london but it was very small and she wanted to get married so they moved away. she spends thousands of pounds a year on train tickets, reall extoriate amounts, for trains that are usually delayed, being fixed and very very busy. i recommened that if you did buy a house, make it somewhere reasonably close so you could drive in, or didnt have to have a 2hr train journey then take 2 tubes. because she's at the end of her tether now

The thing is: Do I buy a flat in London or a house outside of London and commute in?

There's pros & cons for either. - Less than an hour commute & easy access to lot's of stuff or a longer commute but at least I live in a house. With a garden.

Which would you choose? And why?
In my opinion London is way to busy, move out of London somewhere a bit nicer and get yourself a house with a nice garden and that and then commute, my old man left london 30 years ago at 35 and said it was one of the better moves he made, commuted 6 hours a day for 2 years then started a business down here.

Yes, it is....

I worked there for 9 years.

Nastiest, most arrogent, rude, un-happy, miserable place ever. I hope never to have to work there again.

Hold the door open for someone?? Morelike slam it in your face.

Cheers for the opinions guys!

If I was to buy in London it would be something similar to:

http://www.bushells.com/b.php?id=132...00&a=&favpage=

and the bike would be chained to that lamppost you can see in the centre of the piccie!

OUtside of London then it would likely be a house in Basingstoke/Andover/etc. Or Salisbury as that's where I normally wake up at 1am having missed Clapham Junction after going for "just a cheeky half with mates".....
