My bosses were good when I was off sick having my op, but because I open a shop-and so do the other receptionists, it's basically a case of phoning round receptionists on their day off, to get cover, so if it's last minute it's often stressful.
I think at the moment too, everything is that much tighter cash wise, so bosses are much more stressed generally. I suppose it depends on how much staff are off, and whether or not they are considered to be *taking the *****- I know our work is getting more annoyed with the one day off every couple of weeks for food poisoning/flu/sickness brigade. |

Blimey, I can't believe how bad some of your bosses are!
![]() I don't have much time off sick, and I'm never made to feel bad if I do. On Monday I was woken up by a banging headache. It didn't shift by the time I was due to leave work so I texted my boss, explained, and said I would come in for a half day if it shifted. It did, so I went in, and just got 'Are you sure you're ok?' when I turned up ![]() Holidays I can book anytime and am never refused. Don't your bosses realise you are employees, not slaves?

If I were you, I wouldn't go in. Your arm is in a splint so how are you going to drive safely? Your health must come first. Heal properly now otherwise you may make yourself worse in the long run.. Work is only work. Not worth sacraficing your health over. Maria |

I work for a big company now and I really do think I get treated a hell of a lot better where this sort of stuff is concerned. The only real issue I had with my wrist was the project manager running some of the work I'm doing on went mental at me because there was nobody to cover for me whilst I as off sick. I told him I didnt care and that if I didnt have the operation chances are my wrist would never heal properly and that was more important that the ticks in his project plan. He shut up in th end and hasnt moaned about it since. Hope you get it sorted and hope your arm heals up OK, try to not stress about it as that will also delay the healing to.

I must be lucky - my team leader is very understanding and let me have emergency days off twice last summer, once for a minor prang in the car on the way in and another after we'd be kicked in by chavs.
And she can't dare have a go if I go ill (which I haven't yet) because one chap started in the office and then was off on the sick for almost two months! |

As long as my site is covered, then my boss isnt really bothered. To date (In 8 years) as there been an occasion where my site isnt covered! I was off for 2 months when i broke my shoulder back in 2003. Again, it wasnt a problem, as i just got the moth end paperworkd sent home for me to do. There wasnt anyone else that could do it and it would have screwed a lot of things up if i didnt do it.
I would have just phoned your boss and said that i will not be in for a week. You may have gone on SSP but then they know where they stand. Its against employment law for them to call you during that week and 'harass' you even if its to ask how you are doing. |

I have had a month off work with a cut finger.
![]() I was due to have an amputation of the little digit on my right hand as it had deformed and I could not straighten it. As part of the operation paperwork I was given a sick not for a month. During the operation when they had cut my finger open they found what was wrong and rectified the issue without the need of amputation. ![]() After two weeks off work I was bored to death so went back to work. My boss asked me where my fit for work chit was from the doctor. I told him the story and that I was fit for work. But he said without the chit they would not allow me to return to work. I asked the doctor for the chit but he refused. This was because of an infection in the wound. So another two weeks spent sat at home. ![]() I am responsible for my teams sickness attendance (or lack of it) So long as they tell me when they are going to be sick and they have covered all works over the sickness period I don't mind. ![]() |

When my blood pressure went stupid, my bosses where great, I had 3 months of banned from work and then a month ease back. Last year my boss himself "hit the buffers" and needed a couple of months.
that is one of the few benefits of a large company, they accept illness happens although they probably realise they may be partially responsible. I feel for those small companys though. 3 of my brothers run their own businesses and they tell me that someone going off long term sick is bad news as you then have to recruit somebody specifically to do that persons job for the duration. It can be a problem with recruiting, training and then you feel like a b'stard dismissing somebody who has done a good job purely because the original holder of the job has returned. Then again my missus has just returned after 18 months on the sick, how many employers would have kept her job open for her for that length of time

"Condolences re: the funeral, sounds like you're gonna have to get some cover in..."
if you've had to go to hospital and then been told what it is AND what to do/not do for a week, it must be serious enough for you to follow the medical advice... You could offer to go in, but only carry out tasks which don't involve using your lergie hand? ![]()
