Suzuki officially recommend using the semi synthetic oil because a fully synthetic oil can cause the clutch plates to slip.

A JASO MA oil should be safe in a wet clutch, fully synth motul does not cause slip.

Just a little confused as to why the Suzuki mechanic who serviced my bike (its still under warranty, otherwise would have done it myself) advised me to only use semi synthetic and not fully synthetic oil, because of (and I quote) 'clutch slip'. On another matter, is it really worth paying for the extra protection of a fully synthetic when keeping to the recommended 3500/4000 mile service intervals?

I would suggest that the suzuki mechanic has heard something down the pub or alternatively doesn't know his rse from his elbow about oil.
If you use a car oil with lots of friction reducing additives, or an oil of the wrong grade.. then yeah you might get clutch slip. If you use full synth bike oil of the right grade (10w40), that is JASO MA rated (as practically all are), then I can't think why you would get clutch slip. As for the protection of fully synth being required, I doubt it.

Semi is perfectly adequate for the SV anyway.

This appears to be a thorny issue. A google search is littered with those who are adamant that fully synthetic oil is too slippery and can cause clutch slip and those who think its ********. What makes the issue particularly perplexing is that there are very knowledgeable opinions on both sides.

The advantage of semi synthetic bike oil is that you can buy it from Hien Gerrike for about 12£ for four litres, and its perfectly adequate for the job.Fully synthetic costs a lot more and is also adequate for the job.Why pay more?
