When I was at school, there were academically gifted pupils, athletically gifted pupils and normal all-rounders. Everyone had strengths and weaknesses.

Then, some were just dense.
Laziness goes by many names these days..........

Yes I often think it is laziness. They are either to lazy to make an effort to write an intelligible post or were to lazy to make an effort at school and now know no better.

In my opinion nothing makes you appear poorly educated or thick more than an inability to read or write to a basic standard. I know we all have to make allowances for those with genuine problems, but it seems to me (and has already been posted) that these conditions are bandied about as excuses for poor academic performance by those that just cannot be arsed.

In fact, after reading some posts on an undergraduate forum recently, I despair of the level reading and writing skills that is acceptable in schools currently.

.
I have to agree with you Dan. I do think its an over used excuse. My brother is dyslexic, he doesn't use it as an excuse, and for the record has a degree

I think I've officially joined the old gang or something.
Coincidently(and a sweeping generalisation) rather a lot of new members are below the age of 20, and its these members that are usually the ones with terrible posts, so what the hell is going on.
As someone already said, if our foreign friends on here make a huge effort to post properly, why can't our younger members? English is taught all over the world as a mutual second language, are their schools going to have to start teaching text speak as well, because the English are getting so damn lazy with their own language?

waits for the burning flames of hell to descend upon me

Exactly. On the other hand, I worked with someone until a while ago who had been written off by many as being thick as mince, but I suspect he may have been mildly Autistic. He was like the ****ing Rain Man when it came to numbers, and was highly artistic, very inventive and a great creative thinker.

Just goes to show that it cuts both ways - some are diagnosed wrongly and never succeed as a result, some aren't diagnosed at all and do brilliantly.
