The highest point you can fill to, when upright, is to the center line of the hole at the bottom of the filler. The air pressure in the remaining space will not allow any more in.
If the bike is on it's side stand, the higest point is the side of the filler hole which is above the centerline, less air in the top of the tank = more fuel

Not heard the story about a customer being held up by a pump attendant

I've not seen anyone fill up whilst sitting on the bike, although if you must just putting the sidestand down whilst sitting would prevent you falling one way! if you kept the pump on the other side you're sorted

could be interesting to add a poll for 'fill upright' or 'fill on sidestand'

I can see why some stations don't like bikers paying with lids on. I've never paid for fuel with my lid on, I think it's a bit rude tbh. And besides, if every petrol station said it was fine for people to keep 'em on then random robbers might exploit this fact and rob a shop disguised as a biker! (or is that just my vivid imagination talking there.... )

I have always filled my bike while still sat on it. I always have the side stand down as well just in case. Too many petrol station have very messy areas around the pumps. I always keep my lid on too as there is never a clean area to put it down and there is always the chance that my lid could fall on the floor and get damaged and no way will i put it on the ground.

I always fill whilst sat on the bike. Pay at pump is king, and even if you've got to go into the shop sitting on the bike allows you to get more fuel in, and sit down whilst filling.

I also find it much easier sat on the bike, less cumbersome.
