No. You can blip the throttle with, or without the clutch.

It's just an attempt to match the revs before engaging a lower gear.

Me too, I dont remember ever activly learning it. My dad has always blipped so i guess i just did it because it sounded correctly. The times though that the bike hasn't picked up the blip and just miss-fired has made the gearchange not so nice.

I dont bother so much on the bandit, less engine braking and a much "softer" clutch means i just gently let the clutch out

yeah sorry wasn't really thinking. You're right, you can't truly blip without the clutch in, but if you are going to change down without the clutch (which would be unusual - usually clutchless upshifts) you would give it some throttle as you changed down.

its an essential technique when racing, without it you simply cant change gear quick enough during braking. Being able to blip the throttle and apply constant smooth front brake at the same time is a little trickier to master but essential for faster lap times

The new Nissan 350Z does it automatically (even with a manual gearbox)
