with this 2 pack stuff dont you need a clean air fed mask? I heard it was pretty nasty stuff that you wouldnt want to be breathing in.

Yeah you're right an air fed mask is essential, solvent paint causes a lot of problems and can even kill.

That would be the cyanide in it......

Although you CAN now get non-cyanide 2-pack paint as I learned in a thread on here a few months ago....

You mentioned that the primer you have is just a 50/50 thinner/paint mix, that suggests it's cellulose to me... Nothing drastically wrong with that, it's a nice easy to use primer and easier to handle than 2-pack but it does tend to be brittle- so if you bump the fairings it's quite common for the primer to crack, and that'll take out the rest of the paint. You're basically building a very tough top layer on softer foundations.

(anyone who's seen my bike up close recently knows what this looks like when it happens, I bumped my bike head-on into a van and now the paint looks more like a mosaic )

yes thats correct, the cyanide has been replaced with what is known now as water based.

You have to be careful tho because a lot of places are still actually supplying solvent until the stock runs out. Its always best to wear a good quality mask regardless to be honest.

I think its isonanates that or somethign like that I was told when I was doing the aprenticeship a few years back.

northwind,

you are correct, celluloe paint i brittle its not particulary strong and will almost certainly become obsolete over the coming years.

Thats why I always reccomend people use 2k primer systems as it is stronger and you get a much better quality finish.

2k primer uses activator

so an 8cfm compressor is probably not powerful enough to supply a constant stream of fresh air to a mask and also be able to keep up with supplying paint to a gun.

You may need a more capable compressor or even a seperate compressor that is located away from the painting area, you wouldnt want it to be feeding paint particles to your breathing supply.

Yeah that wouldnt be up to the job.

I always reccomend for people doing painting at home that they buy an electric spray system as they provide a constant flow of air.

Most of these diy compressors dont hold steady and the pressure adjusts too much in them creating uneveness when painting.
