IS there actually anything that says a plate must be mounted vertically?

mount it on a horizontal plane. legal sizing just projects a 1/4 inch profile

There is a guy on GixerJunkies who has a sticker on his undertray etc. No nasty yellow plastic thing hanging off the back.

Could be worth a try?

If you are allowed to wear it on your back the number plate light would be a bit of a pain.

OK just food for thought - bike gets nicked, number plate is stuck to your back. You dial 999 and report it to the Police.

Police : "What is VRM of the bike"
You : xxx xxx but my number plate is on my back not on the bike
Police : "So how do you expect us to find it?"
You : You're the Police you tell me
Police : Here is your crime number we will tell you when we find it burnt out via ya chassis number"
You : Oh ooops

How on earth are they expected to find ya bike??? Mmmmm

VRM plates need to be fixed to the vehicle, I think when they state visible form the rear I think they mean rear of the vehicle. LOL

Would not go through an ANPR camera if twas on ya back.

Yes, the actual law:

(3) This paragraph requires each plate to be fixed -

  • (a) in a vertical position or, where that is not possible, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable, and

    (b) in such a position that in normal daylight the characters of the registration mark are easily distinguishable, in the case of a plate fixed on the front of the vehicle, from in front of the vehicle and, in the case of a plate fixed on the rear of the vehicle or trailer, from behind the vehicle or trailer.

in all honesty if the bike is stolen chances of recovery in the original condition is slim number plate or no number plate.

would it really not go through ANPR on my back? interesting considering its not much higher and still visible.
