looks like the calipers had a dodgy curry did the pistons just need a wipe or had they rusted?

Yowzers ...... well , after getting shafted on a sale of Tokico 4 pots I scoured eBay and just won a set of SV1000 4 pots for £19 . They are very scruffy and the bolts are rusted , but they are going to be overhauled by myself and I am going to order the brackets for them to fit them to my 650 . Hopefully my Brake lines are long enough . Might send them away for Anodising as well or maybe Powder Coating if the surface is bad .

Now , back to your brakes , a Bleed will definately be a good start after what you said the other day , I suspect that after this Winter you should be looking at doing an Overhaul . I have been thinking about providing an Overhaul service once my calipers become spare .

I'd change the fluid etc. now, if there is any time you need to have total feedback about what brakes are doing it is this time!

They will be bleed this w/end.

They feel better today. So no doubt that will help, once its does I should be all done.

The whole bike is just under 16k and just over 2 years old, so at this stahe in its life will it really need that. Like with anything I can keep an eye on it.

Thx

Someone did a study a while ago at a track day, found something like 75% of riders had dangerous levels of water in their brake systems.

I think I'd be in the 25% there, I've had more brake fluid changes than oil changes

I got some new dust and ring seals, do I apply a thin layer of red rubber grease only to the inner ring surface (where the piston slides) or just apply it to the whole ring?

cheers

Possibly wrongly but I did the whole ring, it just made sense to me as red rubber grease preserves rubber so you may aswell coat the whole thing. I also gave other rubbers around the bike a coating in the hope it'd stop them from cracking & perishing (tyres took a fair bit of grease )

Me too however I do worry that maybe my 'fresh' brake fluid might get contaminated as it's not really sealed. It's in a big screw top plastic tub, I notice most stuff you see in shops is in a tin.
