Many drivers at this junction actually signal right when following the bend, because the majority of traffic goes left and doesn't signal, so traffic turning right out of the give way make assumptions and pull out across the front of you. People use a right signal to make it clear that they are NOT turning left, but going straight on round the bend.

The give way should actually be changed to suit the flow of the majority of traffic and make the straight on into a right turn.

Completely agree with this!...

Although signalling makes for good riding etiquette, I always ride under the assumption that no-one has seen my signal, and that other drivers/riders signals are potentially false!..

I had those as standard on my BM's in years gone by and also self cancelling indys that were fitted to some 80's Yamahas. They were very effective. DMC has one on his GSXR. You always know he's followed into a turn.

Can't imagine a bleeper loud enough to be heard over the clutch rattle on the Duke though

How loud are they? Could you hear them over a stuubied baffle-less zorst and a pair of earplugs?

Or people should have the highway code beaten into them on a regular basis. Great example though.

OK, good example. So who is going to benefit from your signal? A following rider/driver isn't going to be affected because you're not going to reduce speed, or move across their path. Someone waiting in the junction isn't going to pull out just because you're signaling (I hope), they should wait until you start the position change into the junction. I do agree with you that under those circumstances I would signal if there was someone behind me or waiting in the junction, but really only out of courtesy to them rather than because they could directly benefit from it. I wouldn't signal however if they weren't there.

edit, sorry loads of posts in between, this followed Ophics example

On my new bike, the indicators make gradual louder beeps if left on for prolonged periods. I friggin HATE them...as virtually all my riding is done in London, when I'm stopped at a set of lights, and signalling, the beeper stars going bezerk after 15-20 seconds. Granted, u turn it off, then back on, but they irritate me.

As Ralph pointed out, thats exactly what happens. Only they're actually going one step worse and pulling out even though there isn't a signal. If someone was signalling left, and i'd seen them start to indicate as they approach the junction, I'd take that as enough evidence that they were turning left - especially if the alternative was to sit there all day with a bunch of frustrated drivers sat right behind me.

They are ear-piercingly loud although I don't wear earplugs so that would make a difference obviously.

Surely in London they are great for warning dozy pedestrians and cyclists.
