Thank you for the above Embee, I've learned a little bit more about internal engine forces today

So, you took the back-hander & signed the uprated V8 off then?

Where does extra oil channel go in crank? Thought whole piece was oilway.

Jambo
It was shelved due to "the economy". It might be resurrected someday.

How do you look for the signs of such stres you describe? Is it clearly visible under a microscope?

2nd gen crank already has it, it is on main journal.
Not issue.

I was watching a few youtube video's a while back, people lunching their engines - the "more" could well be the engine cases! I think thre is one of a guy in a mitsubishi eclipse "racing" a BMW, when his engine goes "pop" and later on in the video we see him inspecting a new crankcase breather hole...presumably where many of the insides of his engine escaped!

Thumbs up Carrillo rods

Great Avatar, T.Hanks

Exactly, These events definitely qualify under the heading Catastrophic Failure,

Rarely would it ever be only one thing that would be torn apart,

Enjoy the ride, and best regards,
Blair

Caused by rod that is designed/manufatured wrong and has weak spot around bolt. This events are avoided by using better parts.

Not nessecarily; I suppose statistical analysis could be run to give an indication of the likeyhood a part will fail. There are so many variables to control, that sometimes even a part which resembles many others that have never failed, could fail.

One thing that springs to mind is Scott Smart this season at croft. He and his team had a nightmare, going through a few engines. They ended up having to rebuild one for the race itself, and still that seized as he came over the finishing line (rear wheel locked up!). So you could take all the care in the world and have the best parts, but there are always extraneous, uncontrollable variables that could cause even the best things to break.

In this case and few others it was this rod that failed. Part was changed after failures.
