Nice work there Ed, your daughters obviously got potential for a very enjoyable and unique sport.
I used to have a rifle range at my school, and used to spend endless hours during lunch at the range. I bought myself an expensive-ish rifle from the net, which had accurate aim and ended up having endless fun in my garden shooting targets. As long as one is responsible, then there is no issue. Seeing as your daughter is still quite young, I would perhaps suggest that she could stand to make good use of a decent rifle, especially if there is good enough room in the garden to practice. Silencers are also available to keep the neighbours happy. No reason why you can't put the rifle somewhere only you know about that's hard to get to, and watch her practice when she wants to. I think she would be very fortunate if she's given a chance to excel in a sport that she may have a gift for. |

Please, please please people stop telling Ed/Sophie to use any other gun but her club rifle.
I assume Sophie is shooting prone at 25 yards. using a single point sling, and not yet using a spotting scope. She will have enough problems controlling her breathing. maintaining a consistent position. learning how to balance the rifle, push against the sling and then to squeeze the trigger. There is one hell of a lot of difference then with field shooting, and air rifles etc. It probably took me a good 6 months to adjust fully to a new rifle. Initially I would always shoot better with a new to me rifle, why because I was thinking. Once I get complacent standards would slip and slowly the edge the design/functionality of the new gun would show and then I could up my game again. I was fortunate to be a key holder for my range whilst still at college. The range was on company property as was the college (Leyland Motors Technical College). After the PE teacher had killed us with his initial workout session, we were told we could do any sport we wanted. I questioned him and he agreed any Olympic sport. So we would bugger off down the range whilst still at college. and like I also said earlier 3 nights a week as well

Any shooting is good shooting, even if it is plinking cans rather than targets.

No it isn't Chris. If you want to excel with small bore rifle. Stick to it. do not use anything else.
I know because I made those mistakes as I started to get frustrated with small bore and started with pistols, and full bore rifle.

Can't argue with that, if you're just wanting to have fun though and hunt a bit, shoot everything with anything.

Ed
Sophie obviously has some real talent for this. That's exceptionally good shooting for a novice. I got a .22 rifle (semi-auto) when I was 10 and started hunting/shooting alone when I was 12 but was brought up with a strict respect for firearms. I have a old .22 rifle now (1933 Remmington bolt action) and it's one of my favorite guns ever. Learning (and /or hunting) with a small bore rifle is a good thing as it teaches you patience and accuracy with your shots. Glad to see you are encouraging her in this. Air rifles, pellet guns??? ![]() I gave those up on my 10th Birthday. ![]() (sorry couldn't help myself LOL)

A .22 12ft lb air rife has more killing power at 100 yards than a 12 bore, but we still shoot game with that......... |
