A similar thing happened to me a few years ago, and again, the other car was a 4x4.
I get the distinct impression that many incompetent or aggressive drivers have no idea why they have so many accidents or near misses, so they buy large vehicles for protection from other road users. (Aside: note my use of the word "many" which makes it clear that I'm not slating all 4x4 drivers!) In this case, I was obeying the change of speed limit from 40 to 60 and the Land Rover that had been sitting impatiently behind me decided this would be a good opportunity to overtake. In the dark. In the rain. With a bend at the bottom of the hill... ... and now there's a car coming around the bend ahead of us, and the 4x4 is only just level with me and I realise that he's not going to pull back because he sees it as defeat and he keeps pushing forward and I brake to allow him to pull in front. He pulls in front of me and the oncoming vehicle goes past, but the road is very wet and the 4x4 skids and spins back over the other side other road and into a stone wall. The driver was unhurt and got out of the car. His mate had been in the car behind and they were both making out that I had accelerated deliberately to block him, even though the speed limit signs are clearly visible along that stretch of road. I got a visit from the police later that night but both they and the 4x4's insurance company agreed that it was the other driver's own stupid fault. I call that poetic justice, and I hold on tight to that story (and this one) when 4x4 drivers use their size to intimidate and bully other road users; it has a calming effect, knowing that they will very likely get what they deserve.

I'd LOVE to have the ABILITY to bully someone like that in my Land Rover (note the word ABILITY, don't want to actually do it), but it's got all the acceleration of a lame horse

It never ceases to amaze me that people think a bike is slow because it's obeying a speed limit, and their car/van/4x4 must be faster than you. Tadger probably thought you were ragging the bike for all it's worth to hold him off, instead of the reality where you were just riding as normal.
I'd have burned him! At least for a moment, to make the point... ![]() |
